State Budget a Missed Opportunity

The 2026–27 State Budget includes investment for regional Western Australia, particularly in housing, health, infrastructure and energy. For communities like Esperance, funding that improves hospital services, unlocks housing supply and strengthens essential infrastructure matters.
However, from a local business perspective, this Budget is a missed opportunity.
While households will benefit from cost‑of‑living measures such as fuel payments, capped airfares, and student assistance, there is little aimed directly at easing the pressures facing Esperance businesses. Local employers continue to grapple with workforce shortages, rising wages, high energy and insurance costs, and the challenge of retaining staff in a tight housing market. Seasonal operators face additional pressure, needing to remain viable outside peak periods while still attracting and training workers.
Of particular disappointment was the absence of any adjustment to the payroll tax threshold. Payroll tax is a lever government can pull quickly, and one that would have delivered immediate relief for growing businesses - especially those employing trades, apprentices and trainees locally.
Strong regional economies rely on sustainable businesses. While infrastructure investment is important, it does not replace the need for targeted measures that reduce the day‑to‑day cost of employing people and doing business.
We will continue advocating for practical, regionally appropriate reforms.
